SPACE INVADERS
Photographic interventions and interventions into photography
“Going against the grain of fast, mass-produced photography, Berlin-based visual artist Michel Lamoller has developed his meditative way of creating images that push our idea of what an image can be into new directions.” (Kiriakos Spirou in Dapper Dan Magazine #16)
The prototypic work of Michel Lamoller combines and expands the traditions of photography and bas-relief and explores the three-dimensional possibilities of images. Its main focus lies on confronting the reality of an image with the construction of an alternative, three-dimensional space inside of it.
Exclusively for this exhibition the artist has created site-specific photographic objects that reflect upon the architecture of the exhibition space and takes the viewer on a trip into his own perception.
Michel Lamoller’s work reminds us that after all reality is fragmented by default and that it is the nature of our perception to trick us into believing that we simply receive the world as it is. In fact the construct called ‚reality‘ is created during the process of perception.
The paradigm shift in Epistemology from Kants ‘Thing-in-itself‘ to Phenomenology’s insight that there is neither a ‚pure’ object nor a ‚pure’ subject has still not reached the everyday consciousness.
In particular when it comes to photography we seem to be visual illiterates, accepting a photo as an alithia, a truthful documentation of the real and not as an illusionary machine-made image that only appears to be objective. By fragmenting the image in depth, Lamoller’s works deconstruct the habitual process of perceiving an image and makes this process observable.

Die prototypische Arbeit von Michel Lamoller verbindet und erweitert die Traditionen von Fotografie und Tiefrelief und untersucht das räumliche Potential von Bildern.
Ihr zentraler Fokus liegt darin, die Realität eines Bildes mit der Konstruktion eines alternativen Raumes im Innern des Bildes zu konfrontieren.
Exklusiv für diese Ausstellung hat der Künstler ortsspezifische fotografische Objekte entwickelt, welche die Architektur der Ausstellungsräume reflektieren und den Betrachter seine Wahrnehmung neu erleben lassen.
Michel Lamollers Arbeit erinnert uns daran, dass das Konstrukt, welches Realität genannt wird, von Natur aus fragmentisiert ist und dass unsere eigene Wahrnehmung ist, die uns vorgaukelt, die Welt einfach so zu sehen, wie sie ist. Tatsächlich aber wird ‘Realität’ im Wahrnehmungsprozess vom Wahrnehmenden erzeugt.
Der Paradigmenwechsel in der Epistimologie von Kants ‘Ding-an-sich’ zur Einsicht der Phänomenologie, dass es weder ein reines Objekt noch ein reines Subjekt gibt, hat das Alltagsbewusstsein immer noch nicht erreicht. Die Welt kann nicht unabhängig von einem wahrnehmenden Subjekt rational erfasst und logisch beschrieben werden.
Insbesondere in Bezug auf die Fotografie scheinen wir visuelle Analphabeten zu sein, die
Fotos leichtfertig als alithia, als eine wahrheitsgemäße Dokumentation des Realen akzeptieren und ignorieren, was Fotos eigentlich sind: illusionistische, maschinenerzeugte Bilder, die nur den Anschein erwecken, objektiv zu sein. Indem Michel Lamoller Bilder im dreidimensionalen Raum fragmentisiert, dekonstruiert er den gewöhnlichen Prozess bei der Wahrnehmung von Bildern und macht diesen Prozess sicht- und erlebbar.
