Forty years after her death, Maria Callas is still the most famous opera singer in the world. Her distinctive appearance, three-octave range, unique phrasing and huge talent for tragedy have consolidated her legendary status. It would be an understatement to say that Lucia was one of her favourite parts as she quite literally embodied the title role of Donizetti’s opera. A legendary live performance recorded in Berlin in 1955 with Karajan preserves the memory of one of the finest bel canto performances of the entire twentieth century. Such intensity of suffering verging on madness had never been seen onstage before. Young British-Australian singer Jessica Pratt made her debut in this role and has since been acclaimed on some of the greatest stages from La Scala in Milan to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. For her first Parisian performance, she is following in the footsteps of an exceptional performer.

C’est peu dire que Lucia fut l’un de ses rôles fétiches tant elle fit littéralement « corps » avec le rôle-titre de l’ouvrage de Donizetti. Un live mythique enregistré à Berlin en 1955 avec Karajan conserve ainsi le souvenir de l’un des plus grands moments d’interprétation belcantiste de tout le XXe siècle. Une intensité dans la douleur jusqu’à la folie que l’on n’avait alors jamais connue sur une scène. C’est justement en Lucia que la jeune anglo-australienne Jessica Pratt a débuté sa carrière, rôle dans lequel elle a depuis triomphé sur les plus grandes scènes, de la Scala de Milan au Metropolitan de New York. Pour sa première apparition parisienne, elle s’inscrit à son tour dans les traces d’un destin hors du commun.
