Homily on the Mystery of Life by Metropolitan Sotirios

They Will Want to Commit Suicide but Will Not be Able

Today, I would like to speak to you about the mystery of life: when it begins; how it begins; and what are the various stages of life.

The life of every human being begins as a conceived embryo in the womb of his or her mother. This wondrous act is accomplished by a person’s mother and father, in cooperation with the grace of God. Life starts at the moment of conception and there are four different periods in the life of a human being.

The first period is from the moment that the human being is conceived to the moment that he or she is born and comes out of the womb of his/her mother. After nine months in the womb every child is born crying, because he/she is happy and content where they were, and are now afraid of the unknown. We on the other hand are very happy, because we know what joy this new child will bring.

Now the second stage of life begins and it will continue until a person dies and leaves this world. This second period of life will end when a person dies, but no one wants to die. Everyone fears death, for they do not know what awaits them on the other side, just as a new-born child does not know what awaits him or her in life. We are satisfied living in this world, because we know the joys of life and want them to continue.

Death itself is a new birth into eternity, and this is when a person enters the third stage of life. This third stage of life begins with death and ends with the Second Coming of Christ and the Universal Resurrection of the dead and the righteous Final Judgement of all.

As long as a person is in this third stage of life, he or she will be praying constantly for us who are still alive, and they will also have need of our prayers for them. It is important to note that our prayers — the Memorial Services; the Trisagion Prayers at the grave; the Memorial Liturgies on their behalf — all of these are of spiritual benefit to those who are in this third stage of life.

At the Second Coming of Christ, at which the Universal Resurrection of all and the Last Judgement will take place, each person will be judged and will enter the fourth and final stage of life which will have no end. All those people who have been judged and have been deemed worthy by God, will enter the Eternal Kingdom of God and will enjoy the bliss of Paradise. But those who have been deemed unworthy to be with God, will be consigned to eternal damnation and ever-lasting punishment.

But what is Paradise? Do not imagine that Paradise is a physical place of high mountains, lakes, woods, streams, animals and flowers. Neither can it be described as plates full of pilaf nor seventy-two virgins waiting to provide physical pleasures, as certain other religions teach. None of this truly describes what Paradise is. Paradise is a spiritual state of being in which the righteous will live in the light of the Resurrected Christ, and they will enjoy the infinite holiness, glory, bliss and joy that results from eternal union with God.

Those persons who will be in Hades, unfortunately, will also be in a spiritual state of existence, feeling the pain of their decision to reject and separate themselves from God.

Let me tell you something. In this life, when a person feels that they have been abandoned by God; or they feel that no one loves or wants them any longer – they often decide to put an end to their suffering and loneliness and ultimately, they commit suicide. The persons who find themselves far from God and in the darkness of their own sins and misery, will feel exactly the same. He or she will want to put an end to their suffering and to commit suicide, but they will not be able to, because there is no end to the spiritual life after death and they will experience eternal punishment without end.

This is the meaning of life in all its stages. This is the miracle of life. I tell you these things so that every one of us will know how imperative it is to live a life in harmony with the will of God here on earth and in accordance with the teachings of our Holy Orthodox Faith, so that we may find ourselves in the loving embrace of God’s ever-lasting Kingdom in Paradise.

In the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Thrice-Holy God, You created the universe and You continue to create every one of us. We thank You for bringing us into this world and we ask of You: help us in finding our way to the path that leads us to salvation, so that at Your Second Coming, O Christ, when all those ever born will be resurrected to eternal life and be judged by You the Just Judge, find us worthy of inheriting Your eternal Kingdom, so that we may forever enjoy Your eternal glory; Your infinite mercy; Your ever-lasting holiness; and your boundless joy and happiness in Your presence. We give thanks to You, our Lord Jesus Christ, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit: Trinity One in essence and undivided!
