Canada Home to the First Monastery Dedicated to Patrokosmas: Supplication Service and Walk Through the Gardens

The first monastery in the world dedicated to St. Kosmas the Aitolian (Patrokosmas) was built in Canada in 1993. It is located about a 45-minute drive from the heart of Toronto, in a beautiful 50-acre location full of rolling hills and which today boasts many gardens. Mother Superior Abbess Alexia and twelve nuns live there.

Metropolitan Sotirios and a group of students and Philoptochos ladies made a pilgrimage to Patrokosmas Tuesday evening for the Supplication Service to the Theotokos. Metropolitan Sotirios; the former Dean of the Theological Academy, Fr. I. Delis; and three students chanted on the right side. The wonderful Byzantine choir of the nuns, directed by Abbess Alexia, chanted on the left. Fr. George Nikiforakis served in the Altar.

The monastery offered refreshments to everyone after the Supplication Service and the pilgrims took the opportunity to walk through the wonderful gardens of the monastery.

We remind everyone that we have two monasteries in Canada. The Monastery of Patrokosmas in the Toronto area, and the Monastery of Panagia the Comforter in the Montreal area.

The feast of Panagia the Comforter is celebrated every year with a Hierarchical Vespers Service on August 22 in the evening, and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on August 23 in the morning.

The feast of Patrokosmas is celebrated with a Hierarchical Vespers Service on August 23 in the evening and a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on August 24 in the morning.

Thousand of faithful make the pilgrimage to the monasteries every year for these feasts and it is a sight for sore eyes to see the hills filled with pious pilgrims.

Our Monasteries and our Holy Metropolis remind everyone about these feast days and invite all pious Christians to participate in the Vespers Services, the Divine Liturgies and of course to receive Holy Communion.

Metropolitan Sotirios always says that today we need many people like Patrokosmas and Panagia the Comforter and asks that we all honour our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and our Patrokosmas on their feast days.
