Genius on the Wrong Coast - This documentary on the life and career of modern dancer and choreographer Lester Horton

Screening introduced by filmmaker, Lelia Goldoni.
Guests will include Horton student and dancer Carmen de Lavallade, dance ethnologist and educator Allegra Fuller Snyder, and dance historian and editor George Dorris.

This documentary on the life and career of modern dancer and choreographer Lester Horton shows off the wide range of his work, which often addressed social issues; the multicultural nature of the companies he formed in Los Angeles; the development and codification of his technique; and his multiple talents as choreographer, composer, and designer.
In Jennifer Dunning’s November 14, 1993 New York Times review of the documentary she wrote, “Fluently edited by Aaron Jack Rudelson, the documentary incorporates fascinating footage on early Horton dance exercises and historical events of the times.”
Interviews with his dancers, friends, and associates include the viewpoints of Bella Lewitzky, James Truitte, Connie Spriestersbach, Elizabeth Talbot-Martin, Harry Hay, Marge Perces, Alvin Ailey, Carmen de Lavallade, Lelia Goldoni, Robert Lawrence Balzer, Dorathi Bock Pierre, Newell Reynolds, and Frank Eng.
